It is normal to be in a bad mood once in a while. Achieving a state of constant happiness would be nice but really it is unrealistic for most people. Despite that, constantly feeling sad or unhappy is not itself normal. If you are unhappy most of the time and you struggle to put yourself in a good mood then you should try some coping strategies to improve. Constant sadness and struggling to find enjoyment can put a damper even on the most joyous experiences.

What to do if you feel unhappy?

If you struggle with constant feelings of sadness, you should consider ways to lift up your mood. And there are many strategies that could help you achieve this. These tips are ways you might be able to control feelings of unhappiness.

1. Let sadness out (cry if you have to)

Sadness can often end up getting bottled up inside and causing internal distress. While letting sadness out may not eliminate it completely (although it could for some people) it certainly has the potential to be of great help. If it’s there then you can release it to take it off your mind. This does not mean directing it towards someone, it means taking some time to free yourself from it.

For a few minutes in the day let the sadness out. Let out the feelings of unhappiness by feeling them fully and deeply. If you have to cry, do so. For your dedicated time you should focus on nothing but the emotion of sadness. Some people might prefer to do this while they shower which you can try. Even in your day-to-day life, make an effort not to resist sadness but to let it be there with you.

2. Cope with any source of unhappiness

Maybe you are unhappy because of an event in your life or a situation you are going/went through. This is understandable. At the end of the day you shouldn’t expect yourself to be an emotionless shadow; feeling things as a result of an external cause is normal. However, what you can do is cope and learn to come to terms with or accept anything that might be causing you sadness. No matter what it is that might be burdening you, healing is possible. However, you should be able to help yourself heal by coping and accepting. Some things might be out of your control. That’s life.

The culprit here can also be a mental illness (like PTSD, anxiety, etc.). These can cause sadness or depression and in those situations they (or whatever is causing them) is likely your source of unhappiness. Again, healing is possible. The journey of growing past these mental illnesses is best started as soon as you are aware of them. Seek support from loved ones, read about and implement coping strategies, and consider getting professional help.

3. Learn to focus on positives

Okay, life can have its negatives and those can be disappointing, however you need to step in and focus on the positives instead. Sometimes they are hard to find and seem to not exist but where you can’t find positives, create them. Don’t get into a habit of engaging in toxic positivity where you are completely detached from reality. But you can raise your spirits with self-kindness and by finding joy in the little things (even if they seem miniscule).

This can even be helpful in specific situations as well. Say, for example, you are at a celebration but cannot seem to fully enjoy yourself. Focus on what cheerful things are going on around you so as to fully be there. Often when people struggle to find joy it is because they are not fully in the moment, not fully concentrating on what sources of happiness are not going on around them.

4. Keep yourself around people and things that make you happy

Look, disappointing things always have the possibility of popping up in life. Sometimes they are mildly upsetting while other times they could be a little bit more impactful. Even if you do not have control over the unpredictable variables in life, you can make efforts to take as much control as possible. What this entails is keeping yourself around people that make you happy. Spend time with the ones you love; make jokes and have fun with them. Do stuff you enjoy, whatever that may be. Play video games, exercise, listen to uplifting music, etc. Put as much happiness in your life as you can in order to counter the unhappiness.

5. Accept the troubles of life and live despite them

Per #4, disappointing things can present themselves in life. This is a reality that may be unfavorable but the risk exists nonetheless. Since the level of control you’ll have over life’s situations may vary, the best thing you can do is have strategies for acceptance to protect your mental well-being. Find ways to genuinely come to terms with the hardships of life and live despite them. Don’t let them weigh you down if you experience them –let them grow your character and then get back to being you.
