Life’s problems

Life can come with its fair share of problems. It doesn’t have to be fair to you. You might not control every outcome in your life, but you can control your mindset.

Life’s problems aren’t always your choice

Even if you make mistakes in life that lead you to problems, they still aren’t necessarily your choice or fault. You may just be minding your business in the wrong place at the wrong time and a problem strikes.

Regardless of whether you lead yourself there or if it happens to you as an indirect result of your actions; not every problem in life is a your shortcoming.

No matter what, don’t feel guilty that problems happened to you. They aren’t always your fault and you have nothing to be ashamed of.

Solve them

The obvious solution when faced with a problem in life is to simply solve it. While this may not always be a possibility (a harsh truth), if you are able to solve a problem then doing so is a great idea.

Remember, sometimes a solution may be available, but it’s nuanced or could potentially cause more trouble. If you wish to and can solve a problem, then by all means do so, but remember to do so within reason. If you risk getting hurt or in trouble by doing it, it’s not a good idea.

Accepting life’s problems is important when you don’t have another reasonable solution available, but it’s also important to remember that some problems can and should be solved. Where you do have capability, put effort towards solving the problem so you can get it out of your way. Where you don’t, change your strategy.

Focus on what you can change

Focusing on what you can change can form the foundation of an effective strategy to deal with troubles in life. If it doesn’t lead to a full solution, it at least helps you cushion the problem by giving you some level of control.

By focusing on what you can change, you may bring about enough change to solve the problem. You could give yourself more capability to solve the problem or simply be in a position to not have to worry about it.

Fixating your mind and strategy on what’s in your control is one of the most reasonable things you can do in a tough spot.

Write a list of what you have control over and how you will leverage these things to your advantage.

Don’t ruminate on the problem, focus on finding a solution

One mistake some people make when faced with a problem(s) is they default to ruminating on the problem itself. They may keep repeating it in their heads, running through the same thought again and again.

It may be tempting to focus on a problem if it is one that causes distress, but it’s not a wise use of time and energy. This risks wasting valuable mental bandwidth on the same useless thought(s). These same mental resources could be used for something more useful and beneficial.

Focusing on finding a solution, whether you are able to or not, is a wise use of your time and energy. Even if you choose to use this energy to focus just on what variables you can change, at least this is better than fixating on the problem itself.

Remember, the issue is what it is, but it’s the solution that carries with it hope and promise.

Practice acceptance

When all else may fail, acceptance could be the last choice you have. But, done right, it can help you achieve peace even where it would be seemingly impossible.

You can choose to not accept, and wallow in self-pity and anger. Or you can accept and just move forward. It might be infuriating, sickening, saddening, or whatever else. But the reality is if it happened or is happening and you simply cannot do anything about it, then acceptance is not only your best option, it might be your only one.

Acceptance can be a path to peace. The world around you is not guaranteed to be under your control, which is why you need a way to attain peace no matter where things go.

Acceptance means accepting what is happening but also accepting that it did happen. Even if you do have a way to react maturely and achieve a reasonable solution, it’s important not to get stuck on the frustrating fact that something happened or went wrong.

Having an accepting personality and the ability to accept when needed is a great skill. It’s one that can serve you well in many potential situations that arise in life.
