What To Do If You Are Always Sad

It’s normal to feel a little sadness once in a while, even if it seemingly came out of nowhere. There is a problem, though, if you’re constantly feeling sad.
Sadness can range anywhere from being mildly uncomfortable to being a symptom of depression.
It’s a problem when it’s excessive and when it impedes on your ability to live life.
Coping may feel like a monumental challenge, especially if you’re really feeling down and stuck. But no matter what, there are strategies which can make tolerating sadness easier.
It’s important to remember, though, that coping strategies aren’t always a quick fix. Yes, they can help but this doesn’t mean the sadness disappears overnight.
True healing from sadness may take a little time. And that’s okay. What better thing to spend your time on than boosting your mood?
Even if you go through a long period of time without feeling sad, sadness may pop back up again either briefly or for a significant amount of time. This is why measuring your success in the healing journey doesn’t mean completely eliminating sadness.
Instead, healing and coping should be about improving, no matter how slowly. Be patient with yourself, remember that coping can help, but don’t be deterred if you feel sad once in a while.
Remember that if you are feeling sad too often or if your sadness is too extreme, it is important that you seek professional help. A therapist can discuss techniques with you to help you deal with sadness and depression.
How to deal with feeling sad
Here are some ways to cope with feeling sad.
1. Have goals
One way to cope with sadness is to give the mind something to accomplish. By setting goals and expectations for yourself, you have something to focus on other than your mood.
You don’t have to end world hunger in a day (but if you can do it then by all means go ahead). Set achievable goals for yourself. Try to accomplish something you know you’re likely to succeed at.
When you combine your mini successes, you can have a big success. This is something to celebrate.
Maybe just brushing your teeth is something you typically struggle with. Get up and do it no matter how hard it feels. Don’t think that all you did was something small. Small things add up and they can also help you grow to achieve bigger things.
Have long-term goals, as well. Some of them may need more work so work on them slowly over days or weeks.
The point here is to have something to focus on and accomplish. Have something to push you to get up in the morning and keep pushing throughout the day.
2. Work through it (as best you can)
You don’t have to feel good to live your life and try to achieve your goals. One mistake some people make is they wait until they are in the right mood to get started or finish something.
What if you’re not in the mood again for another 2 days? A week? A month? Longer? You can’t always just wait until the sadness goes away. Use your will to accomplish something.
The sadness may be there, and that’s okay. Work through it. If you’re happy, sad, mad, whatever – ask yourself what you’d be doing if you were feeling well and try to do that very thing.
Live life fully despite the sadness. Treat it as though it were some unwelcome guest in your mind that you have nothing to do with.
3. Build strength
Sadness isn’t necessarily weakness, but strength can help combat sadness. Become stronger mentally and emotionally.
Train yourself to be able to tolerate emotional pain and be okay with it. Even if you feel horrible, try to remain unshaken. Maintain resilience. If you feel you’ve taken an emotional hit, get up and keep fighting.
Sadness is an enemy you are fighting against. Sometimes it may win and others it may lose. Your goal is to build the mental capability to maximize its losses.
4. Feel emotions once in a while
Don’t just bottle up sadness, or any emotion for that matter. Your emotions are ultimately a part of who you are and you should be willing to give them attention when necessary.
Take a few minutes in your day to sit by yourself and be alone with your emotions. Let them come to you. Don’t avoid, embrace.
If you have to, cry. Rock in place or say ‘ouch’ once in a while. Allow your brain a chance to process sadness and any other emotions. This can help with moving past emotional troubles.
5. Do something that makes you feel good
Listen to some calm music, watch a comedian or whatever else. Spend time doing something that makes you feel good.
Make sure what you do is a healthy habit and not something that makes things worse, though.
This can be something as simple as spending time with people you love. Laugh with them, play a board game, etc.
Use what makes you happy as a way to combat the sadness. The opposite of sad is happy so get exposed to as much happiness as you can to put yourself in a good mood.
6. Don’t try too hard to be happy
Trying hard to be happy is usually a waste of time. Not only does it often not work, it can also just make sadness worse by irritating you if you fail to achieve happiness.
Happiness should come naturally. Tell yourself that you’ll try to become genuinely happier, but also remind yourself that if you don’t you’ll just move on with your day.
Take on a passive attitude towards your sadness.
If you’re sad, whatever – work through it and live your life.
If you’re happy, great – again, live your life.
Happiness doesn’t need to be a goal. Don’t try to force happiness. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. You may notice that this is more effective for achieving happiness than forcing yourself to feel that way.
7. Learn
There’s no real specific subject you have to be bound to here. Whatever it is, just learn new things. Educate yourself on topics that are unfamiliar to you. Teach yourself the basics from scratch.
But why learning? Learning can have many benefits for improving mood. Just learning itself can take your mind off of sadness. Forming new memories is also a way to train your brain which can also help you change your thinking.
Learning can also increase your confidence by giving you new information which can help you get through life. You can even read up on new ways to better yourself here on Wire To Better or other places online!
