How To Decrease Time Wasting

A very precious resource people have is time. It goes so quickly but when used right it can make a positive impact on someone’s life.
Since it’s so important to make the most out of your time, it is by default also important to not allow yourself to waste it. This doesn’t mean you have to spend every waking moment of your life working. All this means is you should be cautious with how you spend your days so that they don’t go to waste.
If you worry that this is a problem for you, you may want to find strategies to minimize time wasting. There are many techniques which can help decrease wasted time.
How to not waste your time
Here are some ways to stop wasting time.
1. Notice when/if you are wasting time
An important step in minimizing time wasting is identifying when or if it occurs. You may do a self-assessment of your daily habits and notice you don’t waste any time.
On the other hand, you may notice one or many time wasting habits in your life. Be aware of these. Remain aware about anything you do that ends up throwing away your time with little to no gain for you.
If you notice them, make a change immediately or determine what kind of long-lasting changes you can implement.
Don’t let an instance of time wasting slip past you. The reason why being strict is necessary is even the seemingly miniscule time wasters can add up and cause significant loss.
2. Don’t just think, act
Thinking about ways to minimize time wasting does little if there’s no actual implementation of a strategy to do so. For this reason, when you notice you’re wasting time and want to stop, stop immediately.
If you think of a new way to organize your schedule which will help you make the most of your day, change your schedule accordingly.
Thinking about time management isn’t as important as managing time.
This doesn’t just go for the actual act of time management. Acting instead of thinking applies to responsibilities that you should be using your time for, as well. For example, don’t just think of starting a paper, actually start the paper. Don’t just think about your responsibilities, get them done.
Thinking is a waste of time unless it turns into meaningful action.
3. Accept what you can’t change
Ruminating about things outside of one’s control is not only a waste of mental energy, it’s also a waste of time.
Sometimes people inadvertently waste a large portion of their time on things that they cannot change. This applies to both trying to change things or thinking about them excessively.
Don’t get it wrong. This isn’t an invitation to just sit back and watch life happen to you. No! You can and should try to change things for your own betterment. The point is you need to use your logical thinking. If a situation truly cannot be changed no matter how much effort you put in, you must accept it.
Some efforts are worthwhile and others are fruitless. Make a decision yourself as to where a situation belongs. When you try your best and don’t get what you want, acceptance becomes your best choice.
It doesn’t matter if it’s the past, present, or future. It doesn’t matter if it’s just a thought or reality. If you cannot change something, it is what it is.
This doesn’t mean give up at every inconvenience. Quite the opposite. Resilience is not only okay, it’s encouraged. But make judgements as to what goals are worth the effort.
4. Maintain discipline
Lots of time can be wasted when comfort is given priority over productivity. If something is uncomfortable but you have to do it, do it.
Procrastination is a prime example of time wasting.
Life’s responsibilities may not always be fun but wasting time to avoid discomfort brings with it the risk of more discomfort in the future.
No matter how hard you feel something is, if you have to do it, do so. Ask yourself what you should do to better yourself or to accomplish something and do that thing. You may want to sit and scroll on your phone but you need to clean up the house. Get up and clean up the house.
To be disciplined you need to have self-control and self-regulation. Work through the boredom because life doesn’t have to wait for you.
5. Have a to-do list and stick to it
Know what you need to get done and write it out on your phone or anywhere else. Have a list of things you need to do. Make this list something that matches your goals, even if they’re small.
If you’ve started your own business, your to-do list may contain a lot of work related tasks. If you need to clean your house one day, your list may be chores to do at home.
It doesn’t matter what’s on there; the list can and should change. Just have a list to give you direction in terms of how you spend your time.
6. Don’t get distracted
Distractions can be massive wastes of time. They may be fun but they’re not always a wise way to spend your day.
This isn’t to say you’re not allowed to have fun. But make sure you have fun prudently. Absolutely dedicate some time to enjoy life and be with people you love. But when you do so, make sure it’s not at the expense of an important responsibility.
7. Don’t compare your milestones to those of others
Comparison often does little more than add pressure to life. Say someone isn’t married but they see other people their age get married. This might make them feel pressured to get married even though it just isn’t the right time for them yet.
Marriage is just an example, though. Just about any milestone or accomplishment of another person can be a potential source of comparison.
If you have a habit of comparing where you are or what you’ve done to others then you might also notice this wastes your time. Timeframes are not important. Who does what when shouldn’t matter to you.
Stay on your own path and accomplish your own things. Move forward at your own pace.
8. Have a purpose and work towards it (let it motivate you)
Picking an honorable purpose for you to fulfill in life can serve as a reminder for you to stay focused. This can be an effective strategy to minimize time wasting.
If you’re wasting time or if you think about doing the same, stop yourself immediately and remember your purpose. This is why staying focused and making the most of your time matters.
You’re more likely to achieve your goals if you use your time to work towards them. Distractions make success more unlikely.
This doesn’t mean no breaks nor does it mean compromised sleep. It means staying focused and not losing time on silly things.
9. Think of your future self
Think of the ideal you in 5 years, 10 years, etc. How will you become the ideal you?
Avoid putting yourself in a position where you end up looking back at a life of regrets. Don’t let yourself think back to all the things you were doing when you should’ve been doing more important things.
This applies to your health and well-being as well as your time. The present can significantly affect the future. So strive to make your present one that benefits (not destroys) your future.
