Ways To Stop Being Pessimistic

What is pessimism?
Pessimism describes a tendency to focus on negatives and being more prone to assume something unfavorable is likely to occur. This often comes with overlooking the possibility of positive outcomes.
How to deal with being pessimistic
If you are a pessimist, try these tips in order to help yourself move away from this pattern of thinking.
1. Be aware of your negative thoughts
Being aware of your negative thoughts should start with being able to identify when you are stuck thinking negatively. Make sure you notice when your thoughts take a more unfavorable turn, because sometimes we can be unaware of the fact that we are thinking negatively.
Perhaps you can notice a pattern in terms of when you think more negatively, how negativity plays out in your mind and if your thoughts are related to a certain topic. Maybe you are just generally negative and you don’t seem to follow any pattern. No matter what, become more knowledgeable on the nature of your negative thoughts to better challenge and overcome them.
2. Counter negative thoughts with positive ones
If you become more aware of negative thinking then you should be able to catch when it pops up. In the event you find yourself with a negative thought then counter it immediately with a positive one. This doesn’t mean you have to completely overcome the negative thought all at once. Be patient with yourself here. The goal is to at least create some balance in your thinking and then, with time, you may very well find yourself moving further away from pessimistic thought patterns.
3. Understand that in life bad things can happen
Toxic positivity can turn into a problem in its own way, which is why it is important to remember that in life bad things can happen. This is just part of living. We should mix positive thinking with an ability to plan for things going wrong. It is important to be positive, yes, but it’s also important to be able to accept the bad in life. This is part of the journey of becoming a more resilient person.
Practice a policy of radical acceptance. Genuinely come to terms with the negative possibilities in life and allow your mind to be okay with them. You don’t have to like them or be happy about it, just okay with it. The goal here is not to ignore positivity, it is simply to come to terms with the negativity and become unbothered by it.
4. Remember that good things can happen, too
Take any given situation where you assumed or feared the most unfavorable outcome would result. Could that be a possibility? Yes, but remember good things can happen to you, too. The problem with being pessimistic is that pessimists tend to have a bias for negative thoughts while overlooking the positive ones. Positive outcomes are just as possible as negative ones. Even in the most seemingly despairing moments, favorable or even neutral things can still happen. Remember not to lose that optimism because statistically negative things are not 100% probabilities.
5. Practice being optimistic
Optimism is a skill and, just like other skills, you can build it and get better at it with repetition and practice. It may be difficult at the start, but over time you can learn to be better at positive thinking. What’s important is that you start now if you haven’t already and you stick with it. Do not be deterred because shifting from pessimism to optimism is a radical shift. Nonetheless, it is an achievable change and all you need do is put in the work.
6. Find happiness within
No matter what direction your thoughts take and no matter what direction your life takes, your mind is still yours. One of the best ways to counter pessimism is to own your happiness by not leaving it dependent on external events nor internal thoughts. Finding happiness within means it will no longer matter to you what plays out in your life nor will it matter if you assume the worst. When you have happiness within, you should be able to maintain an unshaken genuine happiness because you do not allow it to be shaken. This is one of the best ways to approach not only pessimism but life in general.
