What does it mean to be paranoid?

People who are paranoid tend to view other people or situations as threatening without sufficient reason to think so. Paranoia makes people feel targeted or unsafe and is not only an often incorrect but also a harmful way to view the world. It’s true that sometimes we are right to be afraid and we shouldn’t ignore our instincts, but paranoid people often have little to no rhyme or reason to think the way they do about something.

What causes paranoia?

Paranoia can be caused by a distorted view of the world, by past experiences or by unresolved mental illness. If you constantly feel paranoid and this is out of control you might want to consider seeking help from a mental health professional who can guide you and help you heal.

What are some ways to stop being paranoid?

If you are paranoid there are things that can be done to decrease these feelings. While this is no replacement for support from a mental health professional (especially if your situation is extreme), these are some at home remedies you can try for this.

1. Understand you are probably overreacting

One of the best first steps in dealing with paranoia is understanding that you are building your feeling on a foundation of incorrect views. Feeling paranoid about the most miniscule matters comes from an emotionally charged view of the world. Control and tame your emotions so that extreme negative ones like fear and anger don’t determine how you view the world. I.e. you might be afraid that something bad will happen because you generally tend to overreact with fear. Controlling fear and building your courage will help you in this regard.

2. Accept that the world is not always a dangerous place

The reality is something can always go wrong with anyone at any time, but this is not the thinking we should lug around with us every time we want to do anything. The world is not as bad and hostile as you may think it is. A lot of times you are in no real danger. And remember, many times you can protect yourself in the event of danger. The latter point is often overlooked as well. The chances of being in a situation where you are both in danger and incapable of protecting yourself to any degree is so slim that it’s surprising anyone ever thinks of it. The world is not overflowing with danger!

3. Realize most people aren’t obsessed with you

Paranoid people tend to think that others are obsessed with them and they are out to get them in some way. This is not true for most people. The majority have more important things to think about than what you do, what you wear or just you in general. How many people do you obsess over? Probably not very many.

4. Don’t think negatively

Let’s be realistic, thinking negatively about every situation and focusing only on the negative possibilities can feed into and even create paranoia. Good things happen. Great things happen. Why just focus on the bad? Switch up your thought patterns by controlling negativity and replacing them with some positivity.

Note: do avoid becoming overly positive to avoid entering toxic positivity. We shouldn’t be taking ourselves to fantasy land. Life has its ups and downs – that’s normal. But negative thinkers tend to focus mostly or only on the downs. This is the habit that needs to be controlled.

5. Learn to replace paranoia with love

You might find yourself filled with feelings of distrust towards the world. Look, don’t be foolishly trusting and start letting yourself off guard in front of any random person. At the same time, try to start loving the world and people in it. Try to see the good in other people and understand their feelings. Being cautious is okay, but being filled with misguided hate and zero altruism can cause you to misjudge others who don’t deserve it.

6. Build your social network

One of the best ways to start seeing the better in people is to build a social network of supportive family and friends. This can show you not only that kindness exists in abundance but it can also teach you to navigate social situations and better empathize with/understand others.

7. Do something fun

Instead of sitting back and being preoccupied by paranoid thoughts, try to use your mental energy for something entertaining and fun. Distract yourself in the healthiest way possible by building good habits that help you grow and develop as a person. Learn to appreciate and love yourself and enjoy your own company and the company of others. The world is not as bad as paranoid thoughts might have you think it is. Find joy on your own terms.

8. Control your paranoid thoughts Paranoid thoughts can pop up in your head unprovoked and seemingly out of nowhere. No matter how many steps people take to control paranoia, this is still a risk. Simply acknowledge these thoughts and let them flow. Then allow yourself to discard them. Control the path they take by not allowing yourself to feed into them by thinking too much about them. Instead, just be an observer of these thoughts and then remind yourself to get back to the moment; deflect your attention.
