Personality can be a major determiner of success. A personality suited for success has the potential to elevate people to remarkable heights.

It’s important that your personality is used as a tool to help you achieve great things. Make use of it as best you can and polish it to benefit you so that you can make the most of it.

But how can someone build a personality for success – a personality ideal for great achievements? Here are some ways to make your personality a tool for success.

1. Set goals for your personality

What are your goals and aspirations? What type of personality do you feel you need to build in order to maximize your chances of achieving these goals? Once you determine what your needs are you can begin implementing changes to your personality that suit those needs.

There are some traits that are probably going to be useful for most people. Having attributes like patience, emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, will prove useful in many, if not most, situations. You can work on obvious ones like those examples. But for the particulars of what personality goals you need, look within.

Once you have an idea of what goals you have for your personality, write them down and write out a strategy to achieve them. Initiate the process of making changes or additions to your lifestyle to develop the skills you need.

2. Use willpower

Use willpower to keep doing what’s best for you even if you want to quit. You may encounter instances when you simply don’t want to do something. A personality that’s suited for success should keep pushing despite this.

There may be times when you want to do something that you really shouldn’t (it’s bad for your health, it’s a waste of your time, etc.). Willpower can help with restraint and not caving into desires – it keeps you on the right path when used correctly.

So how do you develop willpower? Well, one of the best ways is to train your willpower by putting it to use constantly. Think of it like training a muscle until it gets stronger.

Even if you have a bad track record when it comes to using your willpower, start somewhere. Don’t allow yourself to continue down this path.

Start with something small. Maybe try fighting the urge to use your phone while you’re supposed to be working. Checking your phone is fine (there may be something important) but there’s no need to unlock it or respond to unimportant calls/texts if you’re supposed to be working.

Use your willpower more and more. Push the limits of how long you’re able to tolerate. For example, with resisting your phone, resist for 1 hour a few times and push it up to 2 or 3 hours if 1 hour feels easy. Gradually develop your ability to use willpower.

3. Use time management

Time management is an important part of changing a personality and an important part of achieving success. This strategy allows you to benefit in two ways.

First of all, a mind and personality are generally complex things. When something is complex, the approach to it shouldn’t be rushed and low-effort. Instead, a well thought out approach is usually better. If you want to change your personality to build it for success, it’s important to start by making sure you dedicate the right amount of time for this.

This doesn’t mean sitting and doing nothing beyond reflecting on who you are and what you want to become. What you should do here is dedicate some time to yourself. Take time to work out. Read a useful book to teach you a skill or help you become a better you. Take some time to journal and write ideas down. Maybe you might want to take some time (even if just 20 minutes) and address any failures or mental burdens in your life.

Secondly, time management is a strategy to organize your time so you can do the things you need to succeed. Organize your time for your own benefit and don’t allow any time to be wasted. Wasted time is time that could’ve been used for your own gain but instead was lost.

Schedule your time and adhere to this schedule. Use your time as a way to determine what tasks you can work on that are a part of your success journey. Work on your own business, on job applications, on building up your brand, whatever else. Just make sure you use your time to the advantage of your success.

4. Habit formation

It’s important to preface this point by emphasizing the importance of eliminating bad habits. Now that that’s out of the way, we can get into discussing the formation of positive habits. It should come as no surprise that developing and/or maintaining good habits is crucial here.

A major plus for a personality that’s suited for success is making sure it can and will form beneficial habits. Your habits should benefit either your health, your mind, your skills or your body. Even something as simple as eating fruits and vegetables as a daily snack is an example of a good habit (which you should absolutely emulate).

Determine what good habits you want to form and write them down. Then, get into maintaining repetition with these habits and minimize “cheating” as much as possible. A cheat day is okay once in a while, but, for the most part, consistency should be maintained.

5. Have patience

Patience is an extremely admirable and useful personality trait. If you are already a patient person, congratulations. Keep it up. If you lack patience, try techniques to build this. Developing a personality suited for success may require patience so this might even help you with your journey. Moreover, patience is itself a character trait that can elevate potential.

My go-to recommendation for building patience is training this skill. Basically, start off by exposing yourself to safe situations that require patience. Things like learning an instrument, knitting, etc. Gradually push the limits of how long you stay focused on these tasks.

The ultimate goal is to start off pushing yourself for 5 minutes extra after you get bored. Then, add another 5 minutes next time. Add increments of time as you see fit to push yourself to stay focused longer. If you’d like to make this even more beneficial, use your time to focus on something to better you or build up your business.

6. Fake it till you make it

Do you have an idea of what the ideal you or the ideal personality suited for success is? Do you know what traits this personality would have and how you would carry yourself if you had this personality? Well, pretend you’ve achieved them. Pretend to be the ideal you even if you’re not.

This can at least be a great starting point to get you going down the right path. You don’t have to make a transformation overnight, just pretend like you’ve made a transformation which you can build on.

While you genuinely make changes to better yourself, you can at least fake success. If you really get into character you may even start to notice that you’re truly making beneficial changes.
