How To Deal With Feeling Ugly Or Unattractive

Do you struggle with insecurity about the way you look? Feeling ugly can cause some people to become very upset and struggle to cope.
Why you might feel ugly
Feeling ugly often stems from insecurity or past experiences. You may feel ugly because you are simply more inclined to view yourself negatively even if you have positive traits. Past experiences like being mistreated for the way you look, having romantic advancements rejected, not being pursued or being called certain names can also contribute to negative views about the way you look.
What to do if you feel ugly
If you struggle with feeling unattractive and/or you ask yourself questions along the lines of “why am I so ugly,” here are some way to deal with your feelings.
1. Realize you’re not ugly
It may sound corny but it’s kind of true. The reality is beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is nearly impossible for every single person to find you attractive – that would be ridiculous. To some people you might be the most beautiful person ever and to others you might just not be what they find attractive. That’s okay!
Even if no one found you attractive, you also have to remember that this is simply their opinion. The whole world can think you’re ugly and that would be their problem, not yours. As long as you are proud of yourself and you take care of your health you’re valuable. If you were the only person in the world who thought you were attractive as is, that’s enough – what the world around you thinks is their problem.
2. Find value in something other than the way you look (focus on what you can change)
Beyond your physical attractiveness, you can also build your talents and make yourself awesome in other ways. Maybe you can build your skills, your intelligence, your sportiness, your emotional calmness or anything else. You do not have to be defined by the way you look physically. Humans are not defined by one trait, they are a collection of traits. People can offer many different things and do certain things better than others. Focus on what you can change and make the best of that.
3. Realize being good looking is not everything
Being attractive is not the most important thing in the world. Many people won’t remember or care how beautiful or ugly someone is as long as they are decent and do something good for society. People tend to remember positive personality traits more than physical ones. Focus first on building your character and make that your best feature.
Good looks can fade and even good-looking people aren’t always favored by everyone. Happiness shouldn’t be dependent on your appearance or any other external factor for that matter. Your happiness is yours, control it and grow it. Once you achieve happiness, realize that you have something that is much more important than looks.
4. Stop caring
Why is it even a big deal to be ugly? Do you think you might not get a partner? Anybody can get a partner. Sometimes even people who are not viewed as traditionally “attractive” end up with great significant others. If you’re the ugliest person in a room at any time just ignore it and live your life. Enjoy your own presence. Life is too precious to spend it worrying about who views you as attractive vs. who doesn’t.
5. Try to improve the way you look
You might not be able to change everything about yourself but you can change what is in your control. Take care of your health; eat right, drink enough water and exercise within your physical limits. Simply being healthier can present an overall better looking face and body. Try your best to improve your looks but also remember the other tips here to avoid becoming too obsessed with your appearance.
