Ways To Be More Witty

A clever response, a funny joke or maybe a play on words; all of these are things many people wish they could come up with more easily in real life situations. There are so many opportunities for people to be witty but sometimes they can’t be capitalized on due to whatever reason. This is where being witty can come in handy.
What does it mean to be witty?
To be witty means someone is able to form clever and sometimes comedic statements quickly and in the moment. A witty person has great verbal creativity and can use their words the right way at the right time.
How to become a more witty person
1. Stay calm
A mind that’s more calm tends to also be more clear. The ability to form creative thoughts and express them gets better with a clear mind. Word retrieval also improves with calmness. When the mind doesn’t have a lot to worry about, it’s more likely to connect and formulate ideas.
In order to maximize your wittiness potential, make sure you take it easy and maintain mental clarity. You may want to do some research on how to keep calm especially in social or stressful situations. Something you could do, for example, is trying muscle relaxation and softening your gaze.
2. Read
Reading is an opportunity to pick up on ideas and knowledge. How words are phrased and presented to the reader is something you can learn from. Take this as an example for phrasing your own words. Reading can also teach you effective message delivery. Written works typically have a lesson or story to tell. Learning how the writer gets a point across effectively can help with your own wittiness. Reading is essentially a chance to learn from someone (or something) else’s creativity.
3. Build knowledge
You can certainly use reading as a chance to build knowledge but knowledge building can be done in many ways. It doesn’t matter how you do it, but it’s important that you increase how much you know about many topics. By building knowledge you give yourself more material to work with for producing witty statements – it’s a strong foundation for your clever thoughts to build on.
Witty phrases often come from what we know about life. We simply use existing knowledge for wittiness. Make sure you also stay up to date on current events at least to some degree. You don’t have to know every detail of what’s going on in the world but having some idea of what’s new could also be helpful.
4. Practice engaging in witty conversations
Wittiness is like many other skills – it can be developed and fine-tuned with practice. A great way to become more witty is to practice engaging in witty situations. This can help prepare you for real applications by giving you ideas for things to say, ways to think and by generally improving your ability to formulate witty statements.
Try doing this with someone you trust. Have a conversation with them and just discuss anything you want. Let the conversation flow naturally while you identify opportunities to be witty and make witty statements. Don’t do this without the other person’s knowledge. Quite the opposite, you should tell them. Ask them for feedback and let them try to be witty and funny as well. This way you might also learn from them.
5. Build your creativity
Wittiness stems from creativity. The ability to form new and innovative thoughts based on your existing knowledge and phrase those thoughts perfectly culminates in wittiness. Te become more witty, try thinking in new unique ways. Being witty involves saying clever things and one way to help you do that is for you to think in creative ways. If you’re used to a bland way of thinking (“inside the box”), a switch-up in your thinking strategy might help you become more witty.
Creativity is another skill that can come from practice. Try having a wild imagination or using fantasy to let your mind wander. Have conversations with yourself in your head to allow yourself to form creative words and phrases even if just by yourself.
6. Build your vocabulary
Learn new words, learn meanings of words and learn synonyms. You don’t have to become a human dictionary but you can read a dictionary to help you with this. By knowing multiple meanings for the same word, for example, you can start using puns as a comedic tool. More words at your disposal, one’s that can be used to make witty statements, goes towards making you more witty. Plus, by learning new words you broaden your linguistic knowledge. Wittiness is little more than a creative use of language skills.
7. Tailor your wittiness to the situation
Remember being witty doesn’t mean making outbursts or saying inappropriate things for cheap laughs. Being witty entails being clever and saying things that resonates with, not agitates or upsets people. It’s important to make your witty remarks likeable, understandable and suitable for the situation.
Something like making fun of someone just to get an audience laughing might cause others to view you more negatively and make you look like a bully. A witty person should use a strategy that fits the situation. Do not be clever at the expense of anybody or any sensitive topic.
8. Focus on delivery (body language, tone of voice, length of the joke)
Words are important, yes, but the delivery of these words can be equally or even more important. Someone may say something that could’ve been witty had the delivery been different, but it ends up flopping because of style. Sometimes the words aren’t clever but the delivery is.
Practice being able to deliver a witty message. Make sure you don’t overlook delivery when trying to improve wittiness. Body language, tone of voice, length of the joke and other similar considerations should be paid attention to.
