Reasons Why You Might Be Worried About The Future And How To Stop

Reasons why you might be worried about the future
People generally like to avoid uncertainty and the future tends to be very uncertain. This makes the future frightening to think about. Add to that some creative imagination in the form of worst-case scenarios and unfavorable outcomes and you may very well end up making the thought of the future even worse.
You might be focused on the negative possibilities and over looking the positive possibilities. You may have also dealt with a negative or even traumatizing past event and you could be pessimistic about the future because you worry it or something similar will happen again. Perhaps your present is less than ideal and you donโt see much to look forward to in the future. The past and present can be surprisingly impactful at making you fear the future as well. However, we can combat these and other reasons why you fear the future to help you get into the flow of thinking of it more positively.
How to stop worrying about the future
If you are worried about the future rest assured that you are not wrong. The issue arises when this worry goes out of control or presents itself far too often. If you are overly worried, here are some ways to make yourself stop worrying about the future so much.
1. Leave the past behind
This point is important in general but it is especially important if you have made mistakes or are burdened by trauma from the past. The past is a lesson but sometimes this lesson is also a source of fear. You may be afraid that you will repeat the same mistake(s) or encounter the same or a similar traumatizing event(s). This fear is understandable but is often illogical. If you learn from your mistakes you are unlikely to repeat them and even if you do then thatโs okay. Mistakes are a normal part of life and you should not expect immunity from them.
Trauma is also a compelling reason to leave the past behind you. Yes, it can be emotionally burdensome but trauma can also be tolerable if the right therapeutic measures are taken. Consider seeing a mental health professional about strategies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) or desensitization to reconcile with any past trauma you may have. Importantly, remember not to allow past obstacles to make their way into your future oriented thinking. What you went through in the past is unlikely to happen again and it doesnโt deserve much thought. Most people who come out of trauma come out stronger and more resilient to future recurrences either way. Build your mental resilience and leave the past where it happened; in the past.
2. Change your present
Your present is the step before the future (obviously). The odds are the actions you take and the things you do in your present will affect your future at least to some degree. This is why it is paramount that you make your present favorable by your own actions. Donโt wait on things to change for the better by themselves and donโt sit there feeling entitled to great things in life. Use your present to obtain the things you want and make achievements you can be proud of. This will help you make your future more manageable and allow you to take more control.
3. Embrace uncertainty
One of the main reasons people fear the future is they fear the uncertainty that comes with it. Uncertainty is an inevitable part of life. No matter how much control people have they will always have some level of uncertainty originating from things outside of their control. This is part of the journey of life and the best way to deal with it is to not seek more control than you should have. The best course of action is instead to learn novel ways to embrace the uncertainty that the future presents with it. Sure, try to be in control sometimes but donโt seek control in hopeless situations. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Live with this in mind and be more accepting of the possibility things wonโt always go as planned.
4. Create a plan
While uncertainty may be near unavoidable, you still have every right to plan out what future you want to see. You can also plan the means by which you will get from where you are now to that future. Creating a plan accomplishes two main things. First, it allows you to get your thoughts organized in terms of how youโd like to see your future play out. Second, it helps mitigate (but not eliminate) the uncertainty that accompanies the approaching future. If you have a plan and you know how you will act on it then you at least know what you foresee yourself doing and what is likely to come from it. Yes, things donโt always go as planned but many times they do and thatโs what you should focus on.
5. Write out your plan
Write out your plan. Create a flow chart from where you are now with step-by-step instructions on how you will get to the future you dream of. Write out every boring detail and write what you think might go wrong with each step. Brainstorm ideas to combat the challenges you may encounter and put hose on paper. Writing things down decreases the chance that youโll forget them and it allows you to refer to them in case the need presents itself on your journey moving forward. Write! Write! And write some more!
Note: you could also write out your plan digitally to use an old-fashioned Ctrl-F or search. It is really up to you. Some find it better to write on paper while others prefer to write electronically.
6. Change negative thinking
If you are worried about the future, there is a good chance you might also be assuming the worst about it. You may be pessimistic in your view. Itโs possible you think that something (or things) bad will happen. Okay, yes, that is possible for just about anybody. Anyone can go through a negative life event in the future but that is a slim chance. People have a habit of magnifying the bad things that may happen whilst dismissing the very likely possibility that something good will happen. Remember, thereโs a good chance that your future is bright and it is actually a positive thing. Your chances get even better if you have a plan and you are prepared for some of the things that could possibly go wrong. Get out of the habit of focusing on the negative and try to remind yourself that the future very well can be bright.
