Going through life and not having anyone special to share it with may be troubling for many. Living a life far from romantic affection can bring about a wave of negative emotions. Questions start popping up in some people’s heads forcing them to ask if they are good enough, worthy of love, deserving of another’s attention. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

The reality is love should never be forced. When efforts are made to establish relationships and emotional attachment by force there is a high risk of failure. When relationships are built on a desire to find a significant other rather than a genuine bond, they pose a risk of bringing about great emotional harm –possibly even trauma.

Love is something that should be patiently sought after, not rushed and constantly pursued. But that can be hard if you feel time is passing you by and you just haven’t been able to spend your time with the right person. Not to worry! The love expert (me) is here to bestow some wisdom about waiting patiently for love so you can enter more meaningful relationships.

Ways to wait patiently for love

Here’s how to wait for love patiently.

1. Feel worthy

Sometimes, inner feelings of insecurity translate to behaviors, mannerisms and conversation tactics that reflect these insecurities. For many people, insecurities are off-putting. And while there are some who are more open to people with insecurities and even find them attractive, the reality is many will tend to pull away from someone like this. If you can’t love yourself, how do you expect others to love you?

Feeling secure does not mean you are perfect. It doesn’t mean you have to be a model who everyone pays attention to whenever they speak. Finding inner security means feeling confident and reassured regardless of any possible flaws. It means emotional security and being able to feel confident alone. This is what it means to feel worthy. Do this and you have started the process of forming a personality suited for love.

2. Focus on bettering yourself

While feeling worthy should come from within, regardless of circumstance, it is also important to work on the things that can be improved. It is one thing to accept what cannot be changed, but it is another thing to have the potential to be able to become better and not act on it. Maybe you feel your weight is unhealthy. Try to get moving and put yourself on a healthy diet that includes nutritious foods. Maybe you’ve neglected your mind for a long time. Get into reading and work on building up your knowledge.

Create a plan to follow for self-improvement. What this accomplishes is twofold. First, improving yourself may make you happier being alone and get your mind off finding a relationship or significant other. Second, when you work on yourself you may actually notice more chances to find love. Maybe you join a book club and find someone with the same interests as you, for example. When you focus inwards, there’s a better chance others will focus on you, as well.

3. Remember love isn’t everything

Waiting patiently for love means you do just that, wait patiently. If you are fixated on love and you have centered your thoughts around it then you are not waiting patiently. Not only does being fixated on love come with the risk of coming off as desperate, it also comes with a risk of causing emotional exhaustion. Constantly wondering who we are going to be with, when and where we will find them, if we even deserve them, or anything else along those lines is a waste of mental energy. It can also cause emotional distress if ideals aren’t met or patience starts wearing thin. Use your mental energy towards number 2 on this list (bettering yourself) rather than on searching for love, which should itself come naturally.

4. Be happy being single

Being single can be frustrating for some. While that is not fully unjustified, it is also a bit over-the-top to feel that just because you are going it alone then you should be angry. The single life is nothing to be ashamed of, A. And B, it is not really that negative of an experience for many people who make the best of it and find joy in being single.

There are many things we may not be able to do in a relationship so we should do them while single. Being in a relationship often means compromises, which is great. That is the foundation of many successful relationships and the lack of compromise is a major cause of relationship failure. But when you’re single there is no need to compromise for a significant other. You may have family members, friends, co-workers, etc. who you have to compromise for, but that’s usually not as far-reaching as a relationship.

The list of pros of being single goes on. Don’t go actively avoiding being with someone you like just because you enjoy single life so much. But find a balance which allows you to find happiness being single while still preparing for and cautiously seeking out a relationship.

5. Stay away from relationship content online

The internet is great for cat videos and learning new things. For relationship watching? Not so much. Recently, there seems to be an uptick in the amount of relationship videos I see of happy couples and people sharing their experiences with crushes and exes. You can be happy for them, don’t get me wrong. But this content can push others to constantly desire the feeling of loving and being loved. That can then cause people to feel bad about themselves.

Try using not interested features on social media. Many social media platforms also use algorithms to determine what viewers are shown. Try liking or watching through content that is more educational or entertaining. Also, make sure the accounts you follow make you feel happy and/or enriched. If you follow accounts that upset you, try muting, unfollowing, or (as a last resort) blocking.

6. Socialize

Having a social life does three great things for patience in love. First, it helps put the mind to good use and can distract from less than ideal romantic situations. Second, it is a great opportunity to work on social skills –which can come in handy in the dating sphere. Thirdly, socializing is a great way to connect with people you know and possibly even meet new people. Someone you know or meet could very well be your soulmate. Now granted it’s possible you won’t meet the love of your life by socializing, but there is still a possibility and the other benefits make it worth the time.
