How To Grow Your Social Life: 7 Ways To Become More Social

How to be more social and build your social life
If you want to expand your social circle or you don’t have one and would like to initiate the process of building a social circle, this list is a great place to start. These are ways in which you can grow your social life and become more social.
1. Reconnect with any old friends you might have
If you lost touch with any friends, make an effort to reach out to them. This is if you feel comfortable doing so, of course. If you lost touch on good terms, don’t hesitate to make an effort to reconnect with that person. They might become a really great friend and/or introduce you to new people – both ways to help you grow your social circle.
2. Meet friends of friends
This goes for new or old friends. Many people are connected in one way or another. You might find that by taking the opportunity to meet friends of friends you grow your social circle in novel ways. There’s nothing wrong with keeping friends you’ve known for a long time. But meeting mutuals can be a great way to actively grow your social circle.
3. Make small talk
You don’t have to be extremely familiar with someone to make small talk. You also don’t need to intend it to turn into a lasting friendship. If you find the situation is right, make small talk. This could turn into a friendship or at least help you get into a social flow.
You may hit it off and you may not, but exchange a few words. Maybe asking a cashier how there day is or if it’s been a busy day. Do you have to become best friends with the cashier? No. But at least talk to people casually to get in a social state of mind.
4. Build your confidence
Confidence allows you to more easily navigate social situations so that you can maintain and build a social life. Confident people are more likely to get along with others and make friends more easily. Being confident doesn’t have to be excessive (in fact, excessive confidence might backfire). Simply looking comfortable, reassured and relaxed is enough.
5. Have something to talk about
This can help with starting conversations and keeping them going. It might also attract people to you when they see you have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. Having something to talk about can make social interactions exponentially more natural and exciting.
Build knowledge on many areas of interest or build natural experiences in life. It doesn’t have to be hard. Try to read some things online to grow your knowledge and be able to share this information and use it in conversation. Try to diversify what you decide to learn about and avoid topics that could cause tension (like politics, for example).
6. Be a great communicator
Being able to effectively communicate knowledge or anything else is also important in the context of a social life. There’s a lot of ways to say the same things and there are certain strategies that help convey messages more effectively. Good communication can even work to make you more likeable generally.
Focus on phrasing: learn assertive but nice ways to say things. Be personable and generally appear nice but not too nice. Practice speaking to yourself in a mirror or into a voice recorder to get a feel for how you look, act and speak when trying to get a message across.
7. Take it easy
A great way to present yourself in a social gathering or interaction is to simply appear relaxed and take it easy. Genuinely be calm and learn to relax in social situations. Avoid looking tense or speaking in a way that reflects inner tension. Let out a sigh (by yourself) if you’re nervous and try to focus your mind either on a conversation or something neutral (like the ground). Don’t overthink social situations and remember not to make them big deals.
