How To Deal With Toxic People

Toxic people are very mentally draining. Just being around them or trying to communicate with them can be challenging. Their personality can be rude, dismissive, cause stress and be hurtful.
It’s important to be capable of dealing with different types of people. Anyone can enter your life without you expecting it – this includes toxic people.
Having the skills necessary to deal with people like this can be useful at any time. Being able to navigate difficult personalities can help in situations where getting away from toxic people is difficult (i.e. the workplace). Even if you have the skills to deal with these people but don’t encounter them, at least you would’ve taken the right precautions.
Ways to deal with toxic people
Here are some ways to deal with toxic people.
1. Ignore their behavior
Sometimes the best way to keep your peace of mind is to simply ignore toxic people’s behaviors. Don’t allow their toxicity to occupy your mind.
Let whatever they may say or do be their business while you proceed as though nothing happened. But remember to always remain vigilant and stay safe.
2. Avoid them when possible
You can also try avoiding toxic people by simply keeping your distance and minimizing interaction with them as best you can. If you can move away from someone toxic and leave them out of your life then do so.
The problem is this may not always be an option. Sometimes circumstances might put you with toxic people. This is why being able to ignore and find other strategies to deal with them is also important.
Of course, though, when avoidance is an option then take it. Try finding other, less toxic people to be around.
3. If they bother you, take it in stride
If someone toxic starts bothering you with their words or actions, take it in stride. Even if it angers you (which it shouldn’t), don’t show it.
Maintain a confident demeanor, stay calm and take long to react if possible. Don’t get jittery and nervous. It’s important to show strength on the outside.
4. Focus on yourself
Toxic people can be distracting. They often distract others from their goals, ideals, ambitions and interests. It’s important that you don’t allow that to happen to you in the face of someone toxic.
Don’t allow toxic people to take you off track. Stay on your path and remain focused on your goals. Remind yourself that your life has value and you won’t let a toxic person change that.
Keep your attention on you. Remain focused on your ambitions and do what’s best for you and your health. You don’t always need to concede time and effort to toxic people.
5. Be respectful but firm
Remaining respectful is important because it’s best not to do something that could potentially escalate a situation with a toxic person. Respect doesn’t mean being too nice here. It’s simply maintaining class in the way you act and speak.
At the same time, you should also remain firm and be able to respectfully stand your ground. Try to find that nice middle ground, balancing respect with confidence. Remember that you don’t owe toxic people a reward for their disrespectful behavior.
Try to learn ways to say things confidentially and word your requests or responses appropriately. Acknowledge any needs they may have while also keeping your own needs in mind.
6. Build emotional strength
This is more of a general piece of advice. Yes, you should maintain emotional strength when interacting with toxic people but you also should build and possess it in general for day-to-day life.
This isn’t just a skill for dealing with toxic people, it’s a good skill for life in general. Emotional strength can help you express your needs and be fair to yourself. It can help with remaining calm – controling emotions in the face of adversity. Emotional strength makes it easier to tolerate challenges and be resilient. All of these are great to have when dealing with a toxic person.
