Don’t Make Excuses
Sometimes they can slightly delay you. On the more extreme end, excuses can actually be devastating and hold you back significantly in life.
How? Well, an excuse is literally you giving yourself a reason to get out of something. But if that something needs to get done, and you manage to “excuse” yourself from it, you are avoiding a responsibility.
If your goals are self-betterment and growth (which should be goals), excuses can become your way out of the uncomfortable. But sometimes what’s uncomfortable is part of growth.
For some people, eating healthy is uncomfortable, but think of how beneficial it is. Resisting cravings for unhealthy foods can be uncomfortable, but an excuse is a great way to not care.
A good enough excuse you make to yourself can get you out of pretty much any inconvenience that you would otherwise be able to take on, even if it was necessary.
You must remind yourself that if you make too many excuses to get out of what’s best for you, you are losing out.
Don’t let excuses take you hostage and control the path you take in life. Don’t let them give you a reason to take the easier path that might be more harmful in the long run.
Excuses are only your friend if they keep you out of danger or if they actually help you do something beneficial for yourself. Otherwise, they are your enemy.
And the reality is, most times people use excuses not to evade danger or benefit themselves, but instead to avoid what’s best for them.
Remind yourself of the cons that come with making excuses. Remind yourself of how harmful they can be to your life and future.
If you catch yourself making an excuse to avoid doing something that is right or important for you, don’t let the excuse slide.
Dismiss the excuse. Work despite whatever reasoning the excuse presented.
“I’m not in the mood to read 10 pages of a book today.” Well, just reading those 10 pages can add up over time. Those 10 pages and the ultimate accomplishment of completing a book is rewarding on many levels.
You may learn something new, develop your verbal skills, build your attention span, etc. And reading is just an example here. It doesn’t matter if you read a book or an article or whatever. It doesn’t matter if the excuse is for reading or for something else.
An excuse can be a part of what holds your potential back.
If you constantly make excuses to avoid what’s necessary for your growth, you are limiting your potential.
Don’t make excuses. If you do, work through them. But do not give them power over your life. Do not let them be an obstruction in your journey.
