6 Tips For Dealing With Being Bored

What causes boredom?
Boredom can be caused by an environment that does not contain much or any entertaining stimulus. It can also be caused because someone simply feels bored regardless of their environment. If you struggle with boredom even in situations when you shouldn’t (i.e. there is lots going on that should entertain you) then you may want to consider therapy from a professional.
If you struggle with boredom because you feel your environment is authentically uninteresting then you can try to combat boredom by adding some sparkle to your life.
How to deal with boredom
If you struggle with boredom there are some steps that can help you deal with it. Here are some things to do if you always feel bored.
1. Embrace boredom once in a while
Boredom is not necessarily a bad thing at its core. A lot of times boredom can actually lead to positive outcomes. In this modern day many people don’t need to tolerate boredom because as soon as they feel it they find a way to entertain themselves (their phone, computer, video games, etc.)
This is okay but once in a while being bored might actually be a good thing. Boredom can be an opportunity for you to be alone with your thoughts and possibly deal with life’s problems. Being bored and doing nothing other than embracing it may actually allow your mind to wander and be creative. This is favorable because it can help you solve any problem(s) you may be dealing with or think of something great on your own.
2. Leave the house
If you sit at home for good portions of the day there is a good chance you will end up feeling bored. Leaving the house doesn’t have to mean going on a once in a lifetime adventure. Simply going somewhere close to home (maybe a shopping plaza, mall or coffee shop) can be more than enough.
This is even better if you go with friends and if the place you go to has a lot of inspiration. Be in a place where you can focus on your food, stores around you and fun experiences. These are all things that can get your mind working and make it feel entertained.
3. Dedicate time to something important
If there’s a task you should be doing then use time in which you are bored to do it. Yes, it may be a responsibility but a responsibility can turn into a source of entertainment under the right circumstances (like you being bored, maybe). Perhaps you want to learn a new skill, take some time to better yourself or just read a book to broaden your horizons.
Something else you could do is dedicating time to a hobby which you either already have or decide to take on. This is even better if the hobby can be useful to you (i.e. it can be a source of income or good health). You can also make your hobby a worthy cause – if you take on knitting, for example, you might take some scarves or mittens to a local charity. The nice thing about a hobby is you have it handy, meaning you can do it when you feel bored rather than having to look for something to do.
4. Enjoy the internet
This can be literally anything on the internet. You can go through shopping sites to see things you want to buy. Try scouring through some job postings if you need a new role or maybe just watch some educational videos online. There is a plethora of websites and online activities that can offer relief from boredom; try to make use of this.
5. Let your mind wander
When you are bored try pushing your imagination to its limits. Take the extra time to simply take your mind in a new and entertaining direction. You can think about a beautiful memory from the past or focus on something (even if something trivial) in your environment.
6. Stay in touch with family or friends
Other people can be great at helping you deal with a bad case of boredom. Getting lost in an interesting conversation is an entertaining use of time. If you live far away from your family or friends then make use of technology to stay in touch with them. You might be able to video chat, call or even just message each other.
