Study Motivation: How To Get Motivated To Study

When we’re really not in the mood, finding the motivation to study can be an arduous task. While the need to study may be there, the motivation to do so can come and go.
Sometimes the motivation is just completely absent.
Studying is an important part of most academic journeys, and that’s why having the techniques in place to get motivated to do it is pivotal.
Do you need to be motivated to study?
The answer to this is no. While motivation can help with staying focused and being efficient when studying, you don’t necessarily have to be motivated to study well.
Motivation is unreliable and can easily come and go. It may not always be under your control. For this reason, it’s important to remember that you don’t need to be motivated to study. Sometimes you may just have to work through it regardless (more on this later).
How to motivate yourself to study
If you’re just not finding the motivation to study, what should you do?
Here are some ways to get motivated to study.
1. Visualize your ideal life
If you’re short on motivation for studying, take a brief moment to visualize your ideal life. There’s a good chance studying plays a role in achieving this life.
Maybe what you’re studying or whatever you’re studying for at that time is not super important itself, but it very well could be part of the larger journey.
This is incentive to study and study well. If you continue down a path of focus and determination, the results can be very rewarding. Isn’t that motivation enough?
2. Write your goals down and review them whenever you need motivation
With a firm foundation incentivizing you to study, you’ll find the motivation you need more easily. Your goals are reason enough to push yourself to focus.
Why do you need to study? What will it accomplish or help you accomplish? How is something small (like studying in this moment) going to play a role in your future? Ask yourself these questions.
Write your goals on a notes app or on a piece of paper. Whenever you’re in need of motivation, read them back to yourself.
Use them as a motivator to study.
Maybe you’re not studying for the most life-altering test every time you study. But the little things can count. What you learn now can help you with your future goals.
Your goals should be sufficient enough reason to get motivated.
3. Walk/exercise
Get the blood flowing with a brisk walk, some pacing around the house or any other light exercise. This can put you in a good mood which can then translate to motivation.
Bonus points if you use visualization to imagine your ideal life while moving.
Get up. Move your body. Think about something that makes you happy. Give yourself a motivational talk while exercising.
Get pumped!
4. Listen to music
Another way to put yourself in a good mood and improve motivation is to listen to some music. Use music that puts you in a good but calm mood.
Music can help raise your energy levels and put you in the right state of mind for studying.
5. Allocate periods of time to study and stick to them
Block off a certain amount of time and study then. No excuses (unless a dire emergency comes up).
Make your goal studying for 30 minutes, for example (you can do as much time as you want). Sit down, study and stay focused (even if you have to do it against your own will) for a solid 30 minutes. 30 minutes or whatever time you choose doesn’t matter. The point is consistency.
Once the time is done, take a small break.
This time chunking can help motivate you because you have a set goal to achieve. Successfully working through the full x number of minutes is an accomplishment that you can and should be motivated for.
You also have the break at the end as something to look forward to. That can be a whole other motivator to keep you focused. Think that you just have to remain focused for whatever time you have remaining and then you can have your break.
6. Make studying fun
Let’s try mixing things up to make the usually boring act of studying more entertaining. Try to incorporate techniques into studying that will not only help you learn better but also help you get motivated.
For example, try learning something and pretend you’re explaining it after. This can help with retaining info and also make studying more fun.
Get up and pretend to give a lecture on the topic.
Something a little more format based is color coding your studying notes.
When learning, draw correlations to things in your life, too.
Stuff like this can make studying more fun which can help you get more motivated. Additionally, this can help with information retention which then makes studying easier and more rewarding.
7. Take a break (not too long, though)
If the motivation just isn’t coming, take a small break to give yourself a chance to find it. Make it a reasonable period of time – don’t use this as an excuse out of studying.
But remember, taking rest time doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be fully charged up to study afterwards.
This, like other techniques, can help, but sometimes you may not be able to afford a prolonged break while you wait for motivation.
Sometimes you may just need to work through it. This brings us to our next tip.
8. Just study (don’t look for motivation)
You can try as hard as you want but if the motivation isn’t going to come then it just isn’t going to. It may be a bad day, week or even month for your motivation levels.
You may need a while to get your motivation back – and the timeline for when you’ll be in the mood to study may not suit the timeline for when you need to study.
So just get started with studying. Don’t look for the motivation. Sure, it may come to you as you work but it also may not. Either way is fine because it shouldn’t matter to you.
Why shouldn’t it matter? Well, because you gotta do what you gotta do – and sometimes you gotta do it regardless of how you feel. Use your willpower.
Motivation is simply too unreliable for you to place your dependence on it entirely whether for studying or for anything else.
It may not always be there when you need it. The best thing you can do in those situations is work despite it. Don’t let a lack of motivation delay you. Move forward whether you’re in the mood or not.
Sometimes it’s not all about motivation, it’s about having the discipline to do what you need to even if you’re not in the right mood for it.
