How To Stop Being Mentally Weak

Mental strength is a great trait to have, but mental weakness, on the other hand, well… not good.
Mental weakness can make navigating through life a challenge. It can even be downright burdensome to be mentally weak – especially in situations where mental strength is warranted or needed.
Mental weakness may not be an ideal trait for most people, but this is something that can be addressed.
What does it mean to be mentally weak?
Being mentally weak means someone lacks the resilience to overcome or work through obstacles. A mentally weak person is more prone to quitting in the face of hardships whereas a mentally strong person will usually keep trying.
Mental weakness can present itself in the form of being overly emotional, as well. It’s not mentally weak to feel emotions, just to be overly emotional or to let emotions dictate your behavior.
Mentally strong people maintain control over the way they act regardless of how they feel. They do not allow themselves to constantly be overwhelmed and governed by emotions.
It’s okay to feel weak sometimes, especially if things just haven’t been going your way. But it’s important to pick yourself up and move on in these situations.
Regardless of how life goes, you shouldn’t allow yourself to feel weak on many or most days.
Ways to stop being mentally weak
While mental weakness can present a challenge, it is something that can be changed. It is possible for a mentally weak person to build strength, but in some situations this may take some work.
If you feel that you’re mentally weak, consider ways to facilitate changes in your thinking and mentality to resolve this.
Here are some ways to stop being weak mentally.
1. Identify weaknesses
Let’s start off with the basis of mental weakness, which is weaknesses themselves. These weaknesses can be a part of your personality, the way you think, how you approach life’s challenges, and a plethora of other areas.
Wherever you may have weaknesses in your mindset, and whatever they may be, identify them. If you’re unsure of what they are, do some deep self-reflection to pinpoint them.
If you consider yourself mentally weak, there is a very good chance you have weaknesses that can be identified. There’s a good chance they are hidden in your mind and they simply need to be brought to the surface.
Maybe you have insecurities, you have fears or anxieties, or you have traumas – look within. It may be uncomfortable when you first identify them, but do it anyway.
These can be at the core of weakness. By facing them, you can help yourself decrease the power they have over you.
If you need to, write them down on a list. Review them and take time every day to analyze and address them.
2. Realize weakness and strength both come from the mind
If you’re weak, it comes from the mind. And if you’re strong, this too comes from the mind. Both come from the mind and both can be changed with the mind.
Strength is a choice. Sometimes it’s a very tough choice that might push your limits but it’s a choice nonetheless.
Strength comes from the mind. You don’t need to go searching for strength in the world around you, search for it within. That’s where it comes from and that’s the best place to find it.
To become less mentally weak, eliminate weakness. To find strength, find it within or create it. If you want to be strong, just be strong.
3. Embrace challenges
You don’t need to go out looking for challenges to inconvenience yourself in life. But if a challenge does stand in your way, embrace it.
Don’t resist challenges, view them as obstacles that you need to overcome. Make sure you aren’t in a habit of complaining or getting angry. Work through trials.
A tough time is a great time for you to grow as a person. Challenges are opportunities to prove yourself to yourself.
4. Expose yourself to challenges (in a safe setting)
Some challenges need to be willingly taken on. Expose yourself to safe challenges in safe environments that can help you build mental strength.
Try taking on tasks that you’ll struggle to accomplish. This is an excellent way to overcome mental weakness. Mentally weak people generally avoid discomfort even if it’s what’s best for them.
Don’t let this be a problem for you – do not avoid discomfort if this discomfort can help make you better. For example, reading 10 extra pages in a book after you got restless may push the limits of your attention span, but do it anyway.
Learning a new skill may come with failure and frustration. Take on the challenge voluntarily, regardless.
5. Practice mental strength
Mental strength may come naturally to some people but for others it might take a little work. That’s completely fine. If you are the type of person who struggles to be strong, build your mental facility to be strong.
Do something that makes you a little uncomfortable – like, for example, reading for a period of time longer than what you’re used to, being patient with a frustrating task, etc.
Stand in front of a mirror and take on the role of a mentally strong person. How do you carry yourself? What does your body language look like? What are the things you say? How would you behave in a strong way?
Remember, you don’t need to be a bully to be mentally tough. Be firm but polite. Be calm but assertive.
6. Fake it till you make it
Are you mentally weak? Do you struggle to be truly strong? Then just fake it. Pretend you’re strong even if you’re not.
In any situation you find yourself, ask yourself what a demonstration of strength would look like and act accordingly.
If this is done right, one of two things will happen. Either you’ll truly become strong in the process or you’ll gain the benefits of mental strength because you faked it so effectively.
7. Don’t expect comfort
Don’t wait for life to become easy. Don’t expect life to be a smooth journey where the desires of your heart are given to you as you please.
Some of the things most worth having in life need hard work for anyone (yourself included). Expect to be uncomfortable both physically and mentally as you navigate the complexities of life and try to achieve your goals.
If the journey is easy, take it as a pleasant surprise. If it isn’t, oh well. At least you would’ve prepared for it.
8. Use empowering self-talk
Always talk to yourself in an encouraging and uplifting way. Use your words to strengthen yourself and guide your thinking.
Saying something like “I am afraid of this but I will be strong,” or “It doesn’t matter if I am weak one day, I will try to be strong another day.”
If you catch yourself feeling fear, weakness, or about to give up, give yourself a motivational talk.
The way you talk to yourself can change your approach to life. Use self-talk to your advantage.
