How To Own Your Future: 9 Great Ways

The past is a lesson, the present is a gift and the future is a mystery. Unless you can see the future, that last one is very true and might even cause you some fear. Most humans fear the unknown and, no matter how explorative we may be feeling, the fear of the unknown lingers for many of us. But the future is important nonetheless. No matter how much we may worry about it, it still doesn’t change the fact that we need to be able to at least somewhat control the direction it heads in.

Taking ownership of your future is one of the most important things you can spend your present on. Without having some control over the direction your life heads in, you are at risk of losing management over it and ending up in an unfavorable future that you didn’t see coming.

Of course owning the future is easier said than done. There are simply too many variables to account for. We must understand this phrase in context. To take ownership of your future entails controlling as much as you can while still accounting for the possibility of things getting out of hand. If things don’t go your way then self-mastery and stability of your emotions should take control to keep you emotionally regulated. Ultimately, you can do everything in your power to control your future but do not fall into the belief that you are guaranteed things going your way.

Ways to own your future

Here are 9 tips to own your future and forge your own path – of course with the understanding that things may not always go as planned.

1. Don’t be in a state of helplessness

Helplessness can be a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. A lot of people have learned helplessness more than they have actual helplessness. Stop convincing yourself that you cannot do this, that or the other thing. Stop looking at challenges and viewing them as overwhelming and out of your ability to handle. The difference between the people who fail and the people who succeed is those who succeed tend to view themselves as less helpless whereas those who fail tend to view themselves as more helpless. This isn’t true for everyone but it sure is true all too often. Learn what you have control over, try to expand your control over life’s situations by challenging yourself and practicing ways to deal with them. Find ways to build your confidence in situations where you lack it. Moving away from helplessness will increase the chances that you overcome obstacles that may present themselves and help you form a better future.

2. Develop skills

To own your future you should have the skills you need to move forward in life. Your present is the best time to develop these. Skills can be for any application; for work, to improve study habits for school, to better handle life’s problems, to emotionally regulate yourself, and the list goes on. Determine what skills you need in your life and find ways to work on those. The internet is full of free information that will help you develop many (or possibly all) the skills you will require. Utilize these skills to better yourself and you may just see your future looking very favorable.

3. Reinforce good work

Let’s be honest, most of us are pleasure seekers. Few and far between are those who have mastered the ability to do the things they don’t want to do or that don’t feel pleasurable. What you should be doing, though, is reinforcing yourself when you do good work. There is nothing wrong with patting yourself on the back when you succeed. What you do to reward yourself is up to you. Try not to make it anything destructive, though. I.e. your reward for studying for 2 hours shouldn’t be scrolling on your phone for 4 hours. A reward can be a small break, listening to a song you enjoy and the like.

4. Visualize your future

Imagination allows you to visualize an ideal you want which you can then use to work towards. Try to envision the ideal future and the ideal you in the future. This way you know what you want and once you have a goal you can effectively plan a means to achieve it. Make a point of writing down your envisioned ideal on paper so you keep it in memory. Try to break it down into manageable components on paper, as well.

5. Plan

How can you own your future without a plan to do so? Well, I guess it’s possible but things would really have to fall into place for that to happen and you shouldn’t rely on chance here. The future is already difficult to navigate so we should try our best to plan it ourselves. Once you have imagined an ideal future and an ideal you then you should start planning step-by-step how to get there. Lay it out on a piece of paper (preferably) so you can put things into context and avoid repeating points. Try to make your plan a step by step process with subcategories, each with their own explanation. Don’t be hesitant to go back to your plan and change it along the way.

6. Prepare for failure

By anticipating failure you are more likely to mitigate the impact of experiencing it. Failure can range anywhere from a minor setback to a detrimental mess. Prepare for it with strategies to overcome obstacles should they come up. If you can’t overcome them, at least be emotionally prepared to cope.

List out the things that can go wrong with each area of your future and prepare responses for them.

If you make plans but end up failing anyway, that’s okay. Things happen. But you must have a plan.

7. Watch your health

Technically this should be number one but here we are. Your health is the most important part of your future. I understand some things may be out of your control but humans actually have surprising control over many aspects of their health. Focus on adequate exercise, a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables and eliminate stress. These may be easier said than done but hey, look online for tips and use your willpower to stick to what you need to do.

8. Focus on your career or business

Focus on your career and try to find something that aligns with your goals. Try to be good at your job by doing it well and learning any skills you feel you need to do it better. Achieving career success may help you achieve other goals in your future. But also remember to focus on a business if you have one or you wish to start. Running your own business can help you shape a future where you are more in control. With your own business you are your own boss but at the same time a business carries more risk than a permanent job with a reputable company that treats its employees well. See what works best for you but remember to do so with a consideration for what you want your future to look like.

9. Stay on top of your finances

The reason you have a job or business should be so you can stay in control of your finances. Try to avoid a future where you look back at poor spending and saving choices by budgeting based on your income and savings. Remember to save for retirement as well because your ultimate goal in the future should be to retire happily and (hopefully) early. Equally important: work to pay off your debts if you have any!
