How To Heal If You Are Emotionally Broken

When someone is emotionally broken, it means their emotional well-being has been damaged. Typically, this occurs because of an external event that caused mental devastation.

While for some it may feel impossible to put themselves back together after having been broken emotionally, in reality healing is possible. Fixing emotional brokenness is absolutely achievable.

It may require some effort, but the reward is well worth it.

If you’re emotionally broken, the path of recovery is an important one. If you’re not on it yet, now is the time to start.

Ways to heal if you are emotionally broken

Here are some ways to help with healing if you’re emotionally broken.

1. Embrace thoughts and emotions

Avoidance may be a tempting response in the face of emotional hurt. While to some degree avoidance is okay, it’s also not a good long term strategy.

Avoiding emotions could make them stronger and complicate the healing process.

Instead, you should embrace thoughts and emotions once in a while. Emotional damage is rooted in these thoughts and emotions which cause pain and shatter mental well-being.

By embracing your feelings and letting them run their course, you give your mind an opportunity to process what you’ve gone through.

It’s kind of like a sad ending to a movie. Most people will eventually come to terms with it and stop crying when they watch it.

Sure being truly emotionally shattered isn’t like watching a sad movie, but the way people generally deal with it gives insight into how emotions work.

You need to come to terms with your emotional baggage so that you can move on with it. It’s not about liking it, it’s about coming to terms with and accepting it.

2. Use reflective journaling

Take some time to journal your thoughts and emotions. This is a time for organizing how you feel and why you feel it.

Write down whatever emotion you are dealing with. Pinpoint everything about it that irritates, upsets, angers, etc.

Use reflective journaling as a way to vent your feelings. While you write, feel the emotions leaving your mind and being placed on the paper.

3. Develop strength (hard times are great times to develop strength)

As people heal from emotional brokenness, they have the opportunity to become stronger.

Be patient with yourself and start developing the strength to get through this and get through other challenges in life, too. Hard times are some of the best times to develop strength.

This emotional trouble you go through can either be a time for self-destruction or an opportunity for growth. Make it the latter. Plants grow in the rain!

4. Be with people you love

The people you love can be sources of strength and help with putting aside emotional pain. Try to laugh and have some fun with family or friends.

It may be hard to enjoy yourself if the hurt is strong but you must work through it. Being with other people you trust can help you distract yourself in an actually healthy way (as opposed to some other distractions which may not be so healthy).

For a brief moment, try to forget your hurt and focus on your joy. Feel stronger by having the people you love around you. They can be your support during tough times.

5. Live through it as best you can

When someone is emotionally broken, going through bad days, many bad days, should be expected. There may be many good days, too, but bad days as well.

Sometimes you might do everything right but still feel down. If you are dealing with these low points, it’s important to be able to live through them as best you can.

Push through and try to live your life and enjoy yourself. Remind yourself that healing is possible. Remind yourself that if you have a bad day you can have a good day, too.

Heal and live through the tough times simultaneously. It doesn’t mean you need to give up on recovering. But you can live your life while you heal.

Ask yourself what you would be doing if you were not emotionally broken. Then live accordingly. Would you be reading a book? Spending time with family? Laughing at some memes? Whatever it is, do it.

It might feel great or it might feel a little off. That’s okay. You don’t need to get better at a moment’s notice – just try to live with whatever you feel. Once in a while, treat your emotions as an unwanted guest in your mind and find joy despite them. Sometimes focus on healing and other times focus on living.
