How To Deal With Challenges In Life

Image of puzzle pieces.

Think about how you deal with challenges for a moment. How do you cope with them if and when they present themselves? Do you retreat emotionally and panic? Do you embrace them and deal with them strongly? Are you somewhere in the middle?

Obstacles are a part of going through the journey of life. Some of the most successful people in the world have gone through them.

Living a life that is immune to trials and tribulations is nearly impossible. Some of life’s problems are big and others are small. But no matter what, they can arise at any time.

You have two options when it comes to challenges: take them for what they are or struggle to accept them. Staying strong in the face of life’s challenges is the best way to handle them on a mental level.

You don’t have to be passive. Completely the opposite: work to solve problems in a mature way (key word ‘mature’ because you should never do anything to get you in serious trouble and make a problem worse).

Become emotionally strong in the face of adversity!

Emotional strength here means not being emotionally overwhelmed by challenges. It’s a great skill to keep in your mind and use it during tough times.

Ways to deal with challenges in life

These are some ways to become more capable against obstacles in life.

1. Frame them positively

One way to become more resilient in the face of challenges is to frame them positively. I’m talking full on delight.

Okay, maybe not that far. But…

View challenges not as a deterrence or something that holds you back. Instead, view them as an opportunity to grow as a person. View them as a means by which you can fine-tune your personality to make it more suited for success.

Challenges are a game to play and try to win. If you lose, that’s just life – in life, some people lose. Get over it. If you win, great.

Focus on the reward of overcoming this difficulty and coming out stronger and better. When you deal with a challenge in life, you’re given the opportunity to develop useful skills.

2. Use challenges as a means to grow

Don’t just frame challenges as an opportunity to grow. Take action and actually grow. The way you frame it is the thought but the action you take leads to results.

Remember that diamonds form under pressure. A tough time is a great time to grow. It can be a turning point in your life. An opportunity to develop a new persona; become kind, strong, smart and confident.

3. Accept challenges

Some people have a habit of rejecting challenges – they have a strong aversion to them. For some people, challenges are a source of fear that itself might hold them back.

Don’t pursue danger. Although a challenge can be dangerous, you don’t have to go out looking for danger (if it comes to you that’s a different story). You don’t have to go out and look for challenges, but if they come to you, accept them and deal with them.

This is not an open invitation for you to put yourself in unsafe situations. Accepting challenges is about being okay with them if they present themselves and if you have no other choice but to deal with them.

4. Let emotions run their course

Hard times can cause intense and painful emotions. In an ideal situation you wouldn’t be bothered by these but many people are (and that’s okay).

If you do find yourself flooded with emotions, let them run their course. Don’t try to resist emotions or fight them off (which brings the risk of making them stronger).

Let emotions run their course. Feel them and acknowledge them. Let them enter your mind and leave it. Feel whatever you need to. Take time to process things.

If you cry, don’t spend too much time crying. Don’t allow yourself to be held back by emotions. Let your mind process them without resistance but work through them. Don’t let them trip you up or cause you to do something you may regret.

5. Don’t be a victim (never feel entitled to things going your way)

Bitterness can take thoughts hostage when someone is going through a trying time. It may be tempting to get frustrated at life because you feel you’re dealing with something you shouldn’t be.

You might complain and ask yourself why you have to deal with this. You may be debilitated by emotion and get stuck in your own frustration. This is a victim mentality and it can become self-destructive.

A victim mentality can end up leaving you stuck in a cycle of negative thinking. The reality is you aren’t the first person to deal with challenges in life and experiencing hardships is not uncommon.

Things don’t have to go how you want them to, so don’t feel entitled for them to. “If they do, great and if they don’t, great.” Take on that mentality to increase resilience in the face of adversity.
