Your mindset controls how you view the world and it’s a major determiner of your ability to achieve success. The world can be easy sometimes and full of challenges another time. Yet, those with stronger mindsets tend to be able to better navigate the tough times they might go through. In contrast, those with weaker mindsets are more prone to feel defeated and therefore actually be defeated in the face of a challenge(s).

What does it mean to have a strong mindset?

Having a strong mindset doesn’t mean creating a protective bubble around you which keeps you safe from all harm. Instead, a strong mindset helps with coping and moving past challenges, all while providing the mental tools needed to make great achievements.

How to have a strong mindset

The nice thing about mindset is people have a lot of control over it. So if you need to improve your mindset that’s an achievable goal.

Here are some ways to help you strengthen your mindset.

1. Have gratitude

What is going well in your life? Even in the most dismal situations, most people have at least something they can be thankful for. It doesn’t have to be big. Start thinking of the small stuff you are grateful for in your life and move up to listing the bigger ones. Are you breathing? Are you able to eat good food? Do you have a roof over your head? Don’t overlook anything. Write these down on a piece of paper or in a document on a phone or computer. Review them if you ever feel down.

2. Journal

Sit down and journal your positive thoughts, your plans, any emotions you might be feeling or whatever else that comes to mind. If you have something bothering you that you just can’t seem to process or if you have any emotions you need to get off your chest, journal them. Journaling is a great way to vent without having to express yourself verbally to another person. It provides an avenue by which you can clear your mind and therefore strengthen your mindset.

3. Schedule reflection time

Take some time to sit alone and reflect. Reflection is a lot like journaling – it provides an opportunity to think things over and process them, just without writing.

Do reflection time for about 15 to 20 minutes every day (if you have the time). Set a timer and dedicate your focus exclusively to reflection. Allow your thoughts to run through your mind. Feel your emotions. Talk to yourself about anything you want to address. Reflection, like journaling, is a way to declutter the mind.

4. Use flow charts for your goals

If there’s something you want/need to accomplish you might want to consider a flow chart to help you get there. A flow chart allows you to lay out your starting point, your desired end goal and the process in between. Step-by-step and for any goal (no matter how big or small), make a flow chart to help guide your actions.

But what does this have to do with having a stronger mindset? First, just laying out a plan can be mentally reassuring. It can boost confidence knowing that there’s a strategy in place to achieve a goal.

Second, flow charts can help identify any challenges that might arise along the way. This provides an opportunity to design solutions to prevent or overcome obstacles. It doesn’t mean things can’t go wrong, but it means being prepared for some of the possible ways they might go wrong. This can be another confidence boost that helps strengthen your mindset.

5. Read

Read to learn and better yourself. Sometimes, by reading you might find answers you didn’t even know you were looking for. You could end up planting the seeds for a great idea you use in your life. Reading confers knowledge and knowledge can help strengthen your mindset.

If you are going through a difficult chapter in your life, reading may help you find a way out of it. Consider reading about similar challenges others faced. Use that for inspiration and knowledge to get through tough times.

6. Practice self-care

Self-care is something that can happen at a scheduled time (where you might engage in a self-care activity) or it can occur over a prolonged period (eating right daily, doing at least some light exercise every day, keeping yourself well-kempt, etc.). It doesn’t need to be complicated, it just needs to be. Being healthy and properly cared for is great for maintaining a strong mindset.

7. Build confidence

First, it should go without saying that you should be confident at all times. Confidence is a major portion of maintaining a strong mindset. Something that helps build confidence and put people in confident moods is taking time in the day for confidence activities. This can be anything that uplifts you and makes you feel good about yourself.

Try making statements to boost your confidence. “I am…[insert positive feature]” and “I can…[insert goal you are capable of achieving]” statements are good choices. Walk around the room with a puffed out chest and extreme confidence for a few minutes in the day. Make sure to keep your head up and try lightly moving your arms around. Take up space, as well.

8. Engage in physical activity

Go for a walk, go for a light jog or even just pace around the house. Exercise is known for its numerous benefits for physical and mental health. A healthy body and mind work effectively towards a healthy mindset. Anything you’re capable of is fine. You need not do anything extreme but at least try to do something.

9. Have motivation lists

Sit down and list everything that motivates you. Try to find and list out reasons why you do things. Is it your family? Your friends? Your desire to do something great for humanity? Whatever it is, write it down. Having motivation can change your mindset for the better quite effectively. Also, if at any point you feel down or weak, refer to this list to uplift yourself.
