Time is a profoundly important resource. Watching time pass you by and not making the most of it is not a good idea especially when it comes to success and achieving great things.

Time management is a huge determiner of success. People who manage their time effectively and efficiently are generally more productive and more capable of making the most of their days.

Managing your time can actually be pretty easy. By implementing a few strategies, it’s possible to see a huge difference in the value received out of time. Every day has the potential to provide value, so it’s important to make the most of the passage of time.

Time management techniques

Here are a few techniques for time management.

1. Remind yourself of your goals

Being cognizant of life goals can help create a drive in us that gets us motivated and encourages us not to waste time. Even getting out of bed can become easier when we have the motivation to do so to accomplish something for ourselves. Constantly remember your goals so that you can find a reason to push through your day with strength and make the most of the potential it brings. If you find yourself wasting time, remembering your goals can also help get you back on track by focusing attention on the importance of achieving something awesome.

Write your most ambitious goals out on a piece of paper or a sticky note and put it somewhere where you can see it. This can act as a reminder so that even if you forget your reasons for doing what you need to the note will remind you. If ever you need a reminder to not waste time, read the note.

2. Set alarms and reminders

Alarms are a great tool when it comes to time management. You can set alarms for important things or to better organize your schedule. If you need to work on something for an hour, for example, and it’s important that you move on to another task after that, setting an alarm can help you move on to the next item in your schedule. Don’t forget to take breaks, though!

Alarms have another interesting use. They can also help with awareness of the passage of time. Being mindful of how fast time is passing can help with time management and minimizing time wasting. Set an alarm or timer for every hour, for example. Try not to make it a startling one because the goal isn’t to get a jump scare, it’s just for a reminder. A soft alarm tone is fine just make sure you can hear it. When the alarm goes off it tells you that an hour has past. This way you can better understand how you’ve spent your time, how you can better spend the time coming and how your day is going.

Reminders are another time management tool that you should make use of. If there’s something you need to do or if there’s a responsibility you should not procrastinate on, a reminder (or alarm) can bring this to memory. Even if you remember your responsibilities very well, make use of reminders to know what you should do one day vs. the next day. They help with structuring time.

3. Wake up early (doesn’t have to be too early!)

You don’t have to wake up at 5 A.M. It’s not necessarily that you should absolutely not do it, but it really isn’t always necessary. Waking up early entails simply waking up at a reasonable hour. 8 or 9 A.M. is fine. The idea of waking up early is that it could actually make the day feel longer and help boost productivity. It is a way of feeling like the day was experienced fully even if it was the same number of hours.

Now, it’s also important to mention that waking up early should not mean sleeping 4 hours. Sleep is very important and if you wake up early it means you should’ve slept early. Make sure to get 8 to 8.5 hours of sleep every night. If you’re used to sleeping late but your schedule allows a shift in when you sleep and wake up, start gradually going to sleep earlier so you can wake up earlier until you get to a reasonable time. As best you can, try to avoid the 6 A.M. to 2 P.M. sleep schedule or other similar ones.

4. Don’t spend too much time on unimportant things

Time wasting is one of time management’s biggest enemies (if not the biggest). One of the prime ways time is wasted is by spending it on unimportant things – things that aren’t beneficial. This doesn’t mean fun is forbidden, it just means being cognizant of when and how too much time is spent on something that should not be getting this much.

Be aware if you spend too much time doing something or what wastes your time. Some people may convince themselves that they’re going to do something entertaining, like scrolling on their phone, for a few minutes but then end up going much longer. Scrolling on your phone a little bit once or twice a day is okay but don’t let it consume your time without you realizing. This can apply to other areas as well; don’t let time pass you by.

Another thing is making sure you are as efficient as you can be. Some tasks are challenging and some may take more time than expected. However, if you are fully capable of doing something in a reasonable amount of time but you keep getting distracted or avoiding work you are wasting time. Don’t rush! Simply try to be efficient whenever you can without compromising quality.

5. Make a schedule and leave out anything unbeneficial

A schedule is a huge time management tool. Try to make use of it whenever you can to plan out your day, week, month or even year. Schedules help organize time efficiently because you can specify exactly how much time you need to spend on something and what you should be doing at what time. If you need to change your schedule due to unforeseen circumstances, do so. It’s okay to change it up if you need to.

When designing a schedule, make sure to leave out anything unbeneficial or (worse) counterproductive. If you have a bad habit that does no good for you or your self-betterment, leave it out of your schedule completely.
