Living a happy life is not a hard task. Believe it or not, it’s actually something that’s very achievable if someone has the right habits and techniques in place.

There’s a risk of troubles and hardships coming up in life, sure. That’s a risk that simply exists. But happiness isn’t something that should be dependent on circumstances. Your happiness is in your control, unforeseen challenges won’t always be.

Don’t get me wrong, you absolutely can take steps in life to prevent disaster. Preplanning is a crucial skill for minimizing unfavorable surprises.

At the same time, no matter what happens around you, you should have the ability to find happiness as best you can.

How to find happiness?

Emotions can fluctuate, but no matter what, try to implement techniques for a happier life. These aren’t super difficult. Sometimes simple habits can help achieve inner peace and happiness in remarkable ways.

The tips here are purposefully chosen to be simple. This isn’t meant to be a comprehensive list of everything that makes people happy. Feel free to add and take things away to suit you.

The point with this list is these are pretty basic things. They can be done easily but can still have a positive impact on mood.

Here are some simple tips for a happy life.

1. Exercise

Of course only if your health allows. You may want to discuss with a doctor first. But if you can get into an exercise routine, do so. You don’t have to do anything extreme. Just something as simple as a brisk walk for 20 minutes every day can count as exercise.

2. Dance

Put on some music and dance. Have fun. Feel any negative emotions you may be burdened with leaving as you move your body.

3. Listen to music

Don’t raise it too loud for your ears. But definitely get some music going. Listen to whatever you enjoy and if it calms you down or puts you in a good mood, even better.

4. Watch comedy

Get laughing to stay happy. Watching something comedic that gets you smiling and enjoying yourself is a great way to make yourself happy not just while you watch it but in general, as well.

5. Be comedic

Make yourself laugh by finding humour in your daily life. This is especially useful if something doesn’t go your way. Laugh it off and make a joke about it. For example, if you drop something say to yourself “if I didn’t drop it I would’ve been surprised.”

6. Spend time with someone you love

This can be anyone you love and enjoy being around. Friends, family, a partner, or whoever. It doesn’t matter, just spend some time with them and have a chat. No smartphone! Keep your attention in the conversation and enjoy it.

7. Minimize screen time

Screens have become a part of life but they don’t need to have complete control over it. Watching a few funny videos online once in a while can lift up your mood. Screens can also be used to learn valuable things. At the same time, they shouldn’t be where your attention is the majority of your time.

Rest your eyes and minimize screen time. Focus on something else. Maybe have a real conversation with a friend or family member, read a book or enjoy nature.

8. Take breaks

Take time off whenever possible; whether it’s a few minutes or a few days. Let yourself rest and recuperate. This can mean a 15 minute break for every two hours of work, a one week break every once in a while, or whatever else.

Breaks not only help improve mental and physical performance, but they can also help keep you happy.

9. Have self-care days

These can help you feel good about yourself and thereby put you in a better mood overall. Every once in a while, pick a day to take care of yourself. Do whatever you define as self-care.

10. Sleep well

The relation between sleep and mood is pretty well understood. Generally, less sleep equals worse mood and more sleep equals better mood. Make sure you get a sufficient amount and quality of sleep. Allow yourself to wake up feeling more rested and ready to make the most of the day.

11. Schedule reflection time

Reflection time can mean physically journaling or just sitting down and thinking. It’s an opportunity to feel and address emotions. If you don’t feel burdened by any negative feelings then this may not even be necessary. But if you do feel that you’re living with a mental burden, reflection time is a great way to allow emotional processing and healing.

By taking time to reflect on failures, upsets, sources of anger, etc., you could ease their intensity and allow yourself to feel happiness more fully.

Give yourself 15 to 20 minutes a day to reflect.

12. Gently massage your head

Ease tension and relax by just giving yourself a light massage. This can help ease any stress you may have and make you happier.

13. Go for a walk

Go for a walk in nature and take in some fresh air. If you’d prefer, walk around in your house/room/apartment/etc. Experiencing nature is an effective way to get in a good mood but the act of walking (regardless of where) is a great way to ease stress, get blood flowing and increase happiness.

14. Stay away from toxic content online

Ideally, you would minimize screen time, too. It’s important that if/when you go online or on social media, you consume as much positivity as you can.

Stay away from content that may upset you. This could be news, contentious posts or content that makes you compare yourself to others.

Any of those can cause negative emotions, which is why staying away from them is better for happiness. Most social media has a “not interested” feature or something similar. A lot of times, if you like or engage with content you’re likely to see more of it. So try to like or save something that makes you happy.

The internet can be a great place to learn and grow if you use it right. Try to absorb comedy, beautiful scenery, educational material, self-betterment advice, and the like.

15. Lie down for a little bit

Let your body rest by taking some time to lay down and relax. Rest your muscles and give your feet some time to take it easy – especially if you stand for long periods.

Take a few minutes to lay down on your bed every once in a while. Add in some light stretching as well.

16. Gratitude

Be thankful. No matter how small something may seem, appreciate it. No matter what you may be going through, try to look at the glass half full and find something positive to be thankful for.

Gratitude can help you pick up a more positive outlook on life and serve as a reminder for reasons to be happy.

17. Live despite emotions

No matter what or how you feel, always try your best to live life to the fullest. You don’t have to feel good all the time, but still try your best to live fully no matter what.

Just because you feel something doesn’t mean it has to control you. Acknowledge emotions, dismiss them and keep moving forward.

18. Learn new things

Learning can help build knowledge which can be used to navigate the complexities of life. Not only that, but learning can feel rewarding and encouraging. All of these can contribute to an overall more happy lifestyle.

So read a book or an article and try to learn something new. You can even watch a video. Try to learn something even if it’s small.

19. Keep expectations low but effort high

Don’t always expect things to go your way. Don’t expect people to act how you want them to. Set your expectations lower than you’d like so you can be pleasantly surprised if things go your way.

This doesn’t mean you have to sit passively and do nothing for yourself. No! Expect the worst but still put in 110% effort to achieve something great. Separate expectations from motivation. Expect the worst and hope for the best.

20. Relax your muscles (especially in the face)

Stress can cause muscle tension and muscle tension can cause or worsen stress. Relaxing your muscles is an excellent stress alleviation technique that can help put you in a better mood and keep you more calm in general.

21. Think about something that makes you happy

To become more happy, why not try thinking about something that makes you feel happy? Whatever it is – it can be a fond memory, a happy place, a funny joke you once heard, or whatever else.

If you fill a glass with water it becomes a glass of water. Get a happy mind by filling your mind with happy thoughts.

22. Let negative thoughts come and go

You don’t have to be impervious to negative thoughts in order to be happy. Negative thoughts existing may not be a choice but the level of control they have over you is. Don’t let negative thoughts win or have too much sway over your mood. If they arise, let them come and go. Acknowledge them and let them leave your mind.

23. Eat right

Good food for a good mood! Make sure your diet is a healthy one that incorporates different colored vegetables, at least one fruit and a sound variety of minerals and nutrients.

24. Don’t compare yourself to others

Comparing is an effective way to ruin moods. It doesn’t matter how good other people have it. What other people do or have accomplished should be none of your business. You know what is your business, though? Your happiness.

25. Find or keep a hobby

A hobby can be a great way to find joy in life. Try to pick something you’re passionate about and that can be genuinely entertaining. Not only can hobbies help control stress, they can also give you something to be happy and excited about.
